My Must Have Sewing Tools

Tailors, Seamstress, Pattern Maker

A dream sewing studio would have two of everything and an unlimited supply of thread. Here’s a few fashion design tools of the trade you should always have on hand. After years of working in the industry you will accumulate things you forgot you have and tools you use everyday so start here and grow!

01 Pattern Rulers

A pattern maker is never without her rulers. A full kit includes; straight ruler(clear), straight ruler(metal), L-ruler, french curve(12”, 24”), and hip curve. Purchase your kit at Amazon or Mood.

02 Fabric shears

It’s illegal to use my fabric scissors for paper. When you invest in the best pair shears you will understand why it’s important to keep them to yourself. There’s different lengths and curves to fit any tailors preference. I bought my first pair of Gingher my first year in college and I still sharpen and cut with them today. Joann Fabrics is great place to grab your next pair.

03 Dressform

Invest in a quality dress form and get the size that’s to your desired customer’s measurements. Fashion colleges use form sizes 0-8 and sometimes 10-14. If you’re independent and looking for the right size to buy I would recommended a size 8 or bigger. It’s more proportionate to the average size of women today so you won’t work harder increasing or decreasing the pattern size.

04 Pattern Paper

Save money and buy it buy the largest roll you can find. This simple resource goes by so swiftly when your deep into copying and grading new patterns. Find the best for your money at the local Home Depot.
